'The e-Bilum' is a futuristic version of a modern-day Papua New Guinea (PNG) ‘Bilum’ bag with integrated electronic components. This project artefact is fabricated to promote sustainable designs and environmental sustainability, as well as preserving an inherited hand-weaving tradition in PNG that has been passed down for many generations.
The importance of this project is to promote and preserve a traditional art, encourage contemporary art in other cultures and discover futuristic designs from a cultural perspective of art and technology. Hence, to understand and improve its sustainable qualities in the design movement for a zero-waste future in the production and consumption of resources by blending the past idea with the present to create a futuristic product.

Clare Guria is a deaf and hard-of-hearing (HOH) designer from Papua New Guinea, studying Interactive and Visual Design at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. She is a passionate designer with great skills in Graphic/Illustration design, photography and User Experience Design. She is most passionate about great aesthetic in artworks and loves retro and traditional design. Believes that if the client/user does not find the ‘aha moment’ in the design work, then there is something still missing.
